Organize Your Life (Starting in Your Closet)

It happens in the blink of an eye. You have a closet filled with oversized sweaters, tall boots and cozy scarves to keep you warm during those long winter months and then all of a sudden, spring rolls in.   How will you move those thick knits aside and make room for your floral prints and cute skirts?

With winter clutter piled high and new clothes that haven’t made it to the hanger just yet (we blame the cold), organizing your closet for spring can seem like a daunting task. Here are a few ways to help you revamp your closet for the new season ahead.

Out with the Old, In with the New

If you are like us, then the idea of throwing out any of your “old” clothes can feel like the plot to a horror movie. All at once, every article of clothing has some sentimental attachment giving us reason to hold on to that old, worn out sweater that we never wear. Rest assured, we aren’t going to tell you to grab a trash bag and start emptying out your closets. Instead, why not pick one piece of clothing a day for a month to get rid of? Limit what you get rid of to items you haven’t worn in a year or more – that way, you limit your stress (and separation anxiety). Cleansing your closet of those clothes you’ve kept since high school will not only be liberating, but will free your closet up for more up to date fashion (wink wink).

Once you’ve completed your closet clean out, you can give back to your community by donating your clothes – an added benefit. Depending on your location, there might be donation bins strategically placed around your town where you can drop your clothes off and be on your way. There are also several organizations, such as the Salvation Army, that accept clothing and shoe donations To find out more about ways to donate, check out this article.

There’s an App for That

No really, there is. There are a bunch of different apps that are solely dedicated on getting your closet perfect for spring. Some even help you choose an outfit, like our personal favorite Pureple. This fun app lets you take pictures of all of your clothes, shoes, accessories and even your makeup! After you snap a photo of all your outfits and upload them to the app, all you have to do is hit “suggest outfit.” The magical elves inside the app then go through the pics and match shirts, pants, shoes, etc. They virtually pick out an outfit for you. You can also create and save your own outfits into separate categories such as work, special occasions and active wear.

Organize and Conquer

Once you have slimmed down your closet a bit, you may want to add to it. Yes, it is tempting to go on a shopping spree as soon as you toss your old clothes into the charity bin, but before you slide that plastic, follow one more step to your closet clean out.

Organizing can be hard and made harder when you add a bunch of new clothes to your wardrobe. We suggest grabbing some storage bins, shoe racks, and accessory trees. Find items that can help minimize the amount of space that your items take up. Put away your old sweaters, winter scarves, and boots by stowing them away in storage bins under your bed.

Now you have all the tips to dive right into that old sweater pile and organize your current wardrobe- just in time to add to it!
